A group collecting signatures for a November ballot initiative to ask voters whether medical marijuana dispensaries should be banned in Colorado Springs has competition.
Medical marijuana advocates have started gathering signatures, too.
But the signatures they’re collecting are from people who oppose a ban on dispensaries and don’t even want to see the question on the ballot.
Dispensary owners, Colorado Springs-based Colorado Moms for Marijuana and the Colorado Springs Medical Cannabis Council plan to present the unofficial and largely symbolic petition to the City Council.
That’s because the group pushing for the ban is having a difficult time collecting signatures and is calling on residents to ask the council to refer the issue to the ballot. It’s unlikely the council would do that because a majority has voted to regulate the industry.
But that’s not stopping the medical marijuana advocates.
Jessica Hogan, a cannabis council spokeswoman, said her group collected more than 1,000 signatures Sunday at PrideFest, where several people were wearing green plastic necklaces with marijuana-shaped leaves.
“We will continue to collect signatures as long as there is a petition to ban medical marijuana centers here in Colorado Springs,” Hogan said in an e-mail.
“We have distributed signature sheets to all medical marijuana centers,” she added. “In order to sign it, we ask citizens to be a registered voter in Colorado and to live in Colorado Springs.”
The signature-gathering effort was started by Pete Trujillo, who owns Trichome Health Consultants, a medical marijuana dispensary on West Colorado Avenue. Trujillo could not be reached for comment Monday.
Holly Watson, who started Colorado Moms for Marijuana, said she decided to collect signatures, too, after meeting Trujillo at Springs Spree in Memorial Park.
“We were walking around passing out cards and just checking out the booths and that’s when I met him, and I saw the petition, and I thought it was a wonderful idea,” she said.
Legalize it and be done with this nonsense.
Enough already.
agreed
This is getting so old.
So… they are collecting signatures for a petition to ask city counsel to keep something off the ballot even though if there are enough signatures it has to go on the ballot, making this petition not only simply symbolic but completely ineffective in accomplishing anything? How stoned do you have to get to be this stupid?
I don’t know. I’ll let you know in an hour or so.
“SYMBOLIC” is all it presently HAS to be because the anti-mm drive is FAILING MISERABLY – AS WELL IT SHOULD!
Still, if the “PRO-MM” side is busy collecting voter signatures, they would be SMART and WELL SERVED to do a REAL/NON-SYMBOLIC PETITION CALLING FOR DISPENSARIES TO BE ALLOWED TO STAY OPEN AND FREE FROM DAN MAY AND HIS HENCHMEN’S INTERFERENCE.
We’re about to see FULLY LEGALIZED MARIJUANA simply because HYPOCRITICAL MORALITY ZEALOTS WEREN’T REMOTELY SMART ENOUGH TO REALIZE THEY WERE ABOUT TO AWAKEN THE SLEEPING GIANT.
A THOUSAND APPLICATIONS PER DAY! AND PROBABLY 99.9 PERCENT CAN VOTE! JUST HOW MORONIC DO ANTI-MM NUT JOBS HAVE TO BE TO MISS THIS POLITICAL MASSACRE THAT THEY’VE STUPIDLY UNLEASHED. AND WHAT ARE *THEY* SMOKING???
I’m not sure, but it apparently has a side effect of uncontrollable caps lock usage.
lol
I have to say I’m somewhat surprised and relieved to hear they (the Winds) are having trouble gathering signatures.
I can’t imagine that a majority of people in this town support medical marijuana but perhaps they realize that dispensaries are preferable to having thousands of caregivers operating in neighborhoods.
Or better yet maybe people that don’t personally like marijuana have the integrity to allow other people to make that determination for themselves.
At any rate this article gives me hope.
Also, why can’t Freedom get a universal feedback program? The one on mainstream articles is decent, why not use it here?
Let me know when I can sign a petition to get full legaliation for all adults on the ballot.
Seriously, why don’t dispensary owners, Colorado Springs-based Colorado Moms for Marijuana and the Colorado Springs Medical Cannabis Council put together a REAL petition ??? GO FOR THE THROAT !
I’d say it’s more than likely the same issue that comes up at every other election in Colorado Springs, “If it doesn’t directly effect me, I don’t care.” I wouldn’t say it’s support or a lack there of, but apathy.
Tell you what jay. You do the work to type up the petition, get the wording approved, get them printed, and I’ll sign it. Everyone wants something, but no one wants to do the work.
I’m still reeling from the irony of them collecting signatures at the gun show.
l think that somebody with a joint in their hand is much safer than one with a gun in their hand. Both to themselves and to the rest of society.
If your daughters had died due to gunshot, would you be passing around the gun ban petition at the Medical Marijuana expo ?
“Colorado Moms for Marijuana”? Is this seriously what motherhood has devolved into? This is the example moms are looking to set for their children? Really? This makes me want to call my own mom and thank her for not being a dirt ball. Love you Mom.
here you go notsomuch:
http://www.legalize2012.com/
Looks like someone is doing the work.
Stoned does not come as close to the meaning of stupidity as does ignorance. If you read the article it states it is a unofficial and largely symbolic petition. That’s why MOMS4MARIJUANA does what we do. To help educate the public on Medical Marijuana and Hemp. My brain got more damage from the narcotics the doctors put patients on as the plant they’ve recommended. Two years ago some of you were driving next to me while I was on methadone, as the prescription states you may drive on that medication once you know how it affects you. THE VOTE IS YOURS AND I HOPE YOU ALL EDUCATE YOURSELVES BEFORE PICKING THAT PEN UP AT THE POLLS. BLESSINGS TO YOU ALL.
Well, It might be getting old to notsomuch. But its also getting old for the patients that are being told they may have to hit the streets or grow their own medicine. Rome wasn’t built in a day. I spoke with a Doctor from a non MMJ state. He says it pains him to prescribe oxycontin to his patients but he is under such scrutiny with Rx sales quotas. His words exactly..”I just want to tell my patients to go home and smoke some dope, but I cant or I will lose my license.” Its a sad day when even the Drs. know that so many ailments can be treated with a naturally growing plant, yet they aren’t allowed to treat their patients with this medicine. I could care less if this plant is legalized for social use as alcohol, but it is medicine and it does help so many people. I listened to a lady in tears in line at the pharmacy staring at her plethora of 20 some different medications. One in particular was percocet for pain. She was having such bad side effects from it and all the pharmacist could say was ” its normal honey, you aren’t the only one going through this. But it helps and you should take it.” I wanted to rip my hair out, grab this lady and tell her to try MMJ. But I did not as to respect the pharmacy and Drs. We live in such a regulated, pharmaceutical controlled world that peoples personal belief systems really get in the way of good patient care. When will people just understand, MMJ is natural, works, is safe when used appropriately, is not addictive, is generally cheaper than many Rx drugs, and was put here by God or whatever higher power you may believe in….TO USE!!! It is not the evil drug our government has portrayed. People need to stand up for what they believe in and oppose these people who are trying to blame MMJ for their childrens poor choices and lack of parental guidance. It is not a gateway drug any more than any Rx drug out there. All things need to be used in moderation no matter what the substance. MMj is no different of course. I just wish that people would open their minds just a bit. Do some research and understand the benefits of this plant. Anyone who is an advocate would be willing to listen if just ONE person could come up with a viable reason WHY MMJ is such a bad thing. I’ve read a lot of sites, blogs, and articles and NO ONE has even come close to giving accurate scientific reasons why this medicine and obtaining it should be banned. Simple as that. Please, I welcome any and all responses. I am very open minded and if someone could please enlighten me on why this plant should be banned I am willing to listen. If someone can find me something better to help my dads cancer side effects, please share. Keeping in mind, we have tried a lot of things. With MMJ the cancer patient is hungry and will eat, is thirsty and will drink water, is out of pain and can be mobile, is not anxious anymore so as to be social, is now sleeping at night as to function the next day, no longer has headaches so as to be able to read and write, no longer has tremors so as to be able to play golf and work, no longer has sore joints so as to be able to walk around the block, no longer is throwing up so as to gain weight back, etc. So if you can give me one medicine that will alleviate all of these things that MMJ does, please enlighten me. Thank you.
Anyone opposed to allowing a “for profit” operation to conduct business because of a short-sighted agenda they have which has caused some misguided beliefs in something they don’t understand, it just on a rant and trying to win a battle that can’t be won. I’m not talking about the anti-marijuana agenda, that could be won. I mean him gaining his daughter back that he lost due to drug problems. I truly feel sorry for him in that respect. Regardless of whether he wins or loses, he won’t feel better about this.
Either way, this is the only for profit state for medicinal marijuana, it would be folly to vote any of these out right now because of our failing economy, low budgets, and job cuts. Any effort made to shut down medicinal marijuana centers would be a robbery of our own pockets, further loss of police, fire, and medical protection. It makes sense in other states to vote them out where they are not-for-profit operations and do not necessarily benefit the public directly. In this circumstance, though, I do not feel it makes sense.
DIRT BALL WOW. I will call my mom and thank her for educating me and not lying to me about marijuana, so I don’t sound so ignorant to something that even the government has scientific studies on PROVING THE THERAPEUTIC VALUES OF MARIJUANA. This is not about motherhood, that sounds like nonsense. I am not only a PROUD MOM 4 MARIJUANA, BUT A PROUD GRANDMA4MARIJUANA. But let me share with you dear, before medical marijuana my children had no mom. The doctor’s had me taking 15 pills just at bedtime for fibromyalgia, I was comatose, by the advice of a physician. NO MORE FOOTBALL FOR THE KIDS, PARKS, SWIMMING, ECT. The pain one feels with fibromyalgia IS like someone took a baseball bat to my entire body..HHHMMM…still refuse to take narcotics for my pain today. I thought I was going to die and if I stayed on the methadone I WOULD HAVE. IF NOT INTO A GRAVE I WAS DEAD EMOTIONALLY, SPIRITUALLY,,,JUST STRAIGHT NUMB. Today my kids play sports, instruments and I EDUCATE THEM ON MEDICAL MARIJUANA. FUNNY SOME RESPECT THE PHARMACIES THAT PASS OUT METHADONE AND OTHER HARD NARCOTICS MORE THAN THE MEDICINE THAT HAS PROVEN TO HELP OUR FUTURE GENERATIONS. As a Mother and Grandmother it is my belief that I have the responsibilities when it comes to parenting to educate my children and grandchildren my experiences, skills, and qualities. As a citizen it is my responsibility to give back to society and this is how I do it. You are more than welcome to join in an educational experience open to the public on OCT.3, 2010 THE COLORADO EXPO GROUP WILL BE THROWING THE COLORADO SPRINGS CANNABIS EXPO @ THE DOUBLE TREE HOTEL. $5 BUCKS GETS YOU IN THE DOOR, AND A MEDICAL CARD IS NOT REQUIRED. Come and get educated and speak with people with true disabilities and listen to their stories….Come see the truth in MEDICAL MARIJUANA….MOMS4MARIJUANA DOES NOT CONDONE ILLEGAL ACTIVITY BUT UNDERSTANDS THE IMPORTANCE OF KNOWLEDGE!
Holly that post makes me want to hug you. I am so glad you found something that improved your life! The thing with most anti-marijuana enthusiasts is that they blindly support something they’ve never tried themselves.
XXXXXX there’s your hugs. I was running a lab a couple of years ago at a Caner Center here in Colorado Springs, under 5 Oncologist when I was diagnosed with fibromyalgia. I have been told by physicians that I will never work again. Well on all of the pills I couldn’t, until I got signed. I still hurt don’t get me wrong…I need that pain to remind me that I was much more closer to my death taking pills and feeling no pain. I would go four to five days without eating and years of not remembering what it felt like to have an appetite. Check out MOMS4MARIJUANA.COM AND MOMS4MARIJUANA.ORG…..HEY EVERYONE WE HAVE A DADS4MARIJUANA TOO….;) THANK YOU GABE.
Citizen 80919:
My niece didn’t die from a gunshot. She was killed by someone who was under the influence of marijuana and decided it would be okay to drive his car.
Your’s is a stupid analogy.
Cameron I’m sorry to hear that, but does that make it a good reason to oppose the presence of medicinal marijuana centers because someone had the poor judgment to drive while their abilities were impaired? In any scenario, you should not operate heavy machinery when your abilities are impaired and they certainly should have known better.
Well Marcus when you have a loved one almost die from the prescriptions and not the disease then you will understand. I have a husband that is very ill and since his doctor put him on the marijuana he can be a member of his family and join us at church. So until you can understand it fully, please watch what you say as this herb helps people. I do agree that people abuse however people abuse their prescriptions. We have to let God have control and let Him say if this is ok or not. Our God is much much bigger than all this and he loves each of us. We must obey him in all we do. I want to encourage all of you to go before Christ and lay at his feet.
Cameron, my prayers are with you.. Was this person under the influence of only marijuana? I am very interested if you understand the “MEDICINAL VALUES OF MARIJUANA” . Please don’t let anger get in the way of obtaining knowledge. You also have an endocannabinoid system that is essential to good health. It regulates your other 11 systems in your body like your muscular and cardiovascular systems. This medicine also kills cancer. Remember when one points a finger at you they are pointing three back at themselves.
Yes Michelle, when I was on the pills my daughter was 13 and came up to my crying asking me if I was going to die. FROM FIBROMYALGIA? No it was then I saw the pills were killing me and my soul. It wasn’t the disease it was the pills that took me down but didn’t take me out.
Cameron, Just like any Rx drug that may alter your state at all, you should not drive. We all could be killed on any given day by the number of people that drive while on Rx narcotics, sedatives, anti anxiety meds etc. People who use MMj should clearly not drive. The problem is, it is difficult to test to see if a person medicated yesterday or today. Unless the person driving admitted to being on mmj that day, it is still likely it was the day before and the accident may have happened regardless. But you need to remember, every third car you see…chances are they are on some sort of medication. Are you advocating for the ban on alcohol? We all know how many people die at the hands of drunk drivers.
Absolutely not. I think by now and hope there are enough statistics out there for people to realize the damage alcohol can do to one’s body. Marijuana on the other hand is medicine. I agree no one should drive with an altered state of mind. Did you know that the narcotics including methadone that I was prescribed but no longer take all stated that I could drive once I knew how that medicine affected me. That is scary to a degree when you consider all they had me on. I am not the only one. I advocate education and legalization of marijuana and hemp. I do not support narcotic use after it almost took my life. I wish I could share the pictures with you personally. I hope medical mariuana is respected at a “MEDICAL LEVEL”. There are so many testimonials of patients who swore they’d never use marijuana and since have because of whatever ailment they live with. Listen to their stories. These are people who could have died as well from presrciptions—LEGAL ONES. I went from running a lab to a year in bed and had to pray like there was no tomorrow for healing and strength to make it through detox off of methadone. I did that so my kids and my husband, family and friends and myself would have me back. That’s what marijuana did for me. OPEN YOUR MIND AND YOUR HEART PLEASE FOR THE SAKE OF PATIENTS WHO ARE STILL LIVING.
Try not to take many of these people in favor of the dispensary ban so serious. Many of these responding are police officers, task force agents, DA’s and those who stand to gain the most from prohibition.
Many of them are nothing but low paid enforcers who ironically and indirectly keep the wheels of organized crime turning. The war on drugs status quo is dead and financially unsustainable.
They could very easily lay off 100 cops with very little if any effect on street safety. El Paso County needs to get their priorities straight considering they would rather shut down busing for elementary school children then lock up a drug offender or buy a new Mustang for the sheriffs dept.
Send all tax receipts directly to me and I’ll show you how to spend it more wisely.
Colorado Springs has resisted the stated position of the populace that Marijuana is to be decriminalized, and to be ignored as a harm to the State overall.
The stated position of the populace is that marijuana is also medicine.
The City counsel has just got to go… vote them out! Those members who voted to expand our court house, and our heavily filled punitive legal system just need to go away – by ballot. They have resisted the position of the State populace. They have used their country hick court system to gain money from pot by fines, and ruining people’s lives when they cannot afford to provide our children a decent education.
Encourage laws that allow people to protect their property without going to jail for it, and delete your very pricey boy’s in blue. The people have spoken… and very soon it will be legalized across the board because it never should have been made illegal anyways. California legalizes it in November.
You lost the war on pot because you lied to make it illegal.
Google: “Reefer Madness” and Randolph Hearst vs. Marijuana
You will figure out that these bozo’s have been stealing from the populace as a result of a lie. These hard hands have been ruining people’s lives since the 1920′s and doing it with a smile.
Call me a dirt bag? I served in the military longer than you served in the Colorado Springs Police Dept. You can call me sir… and remember that you serve me.

Nice – a “Win Cheech and Chong Tickets” sign while whining for “medical” merry-juana support. Wow, how stupid does Garduno have to be to put those two together and still want people to take her seriously?!
Way to say something without having really said anything, Chugiakattack. Mind validating your statements at all?
Gabe – he/she is talking about the hand written sign in her photo posted above. Most view those two from their comedy troupe days, not so much as the positive activist they are today.
Whenever I request further information on these blogs as I did in my above post, I never receive a response from any of the naysayers on MMJ. Why is that? Is it because they truly can not find any reasonable research on the “bad side effects” of MMJ that outweigh the bad side effects of Rx drugs? Im guessing so.
I am a licensed physician in Colorado and opposed to medical marijuana. THe very term makes my skin crawl. Please show me the double blind placebo controlled studies that show marijuana to be effective for any condition compared to safer products. Smoking marijuana can cause lung cancer, COPD and turn patients with psychotic illness into refractory patients. I have patients that use marijuana and wind up in the state hospital, causing tax payers hundreds of thousands of dollars. Neurologists will tell you that in some cases, it can lead to brain encephalopathy which basically turns your brain to mush and kills you. To say there are no side effects shows incredible ignorance. All medicines have side effects. St Johns wart killed a lot of people by causing heart arrhythmias. I don’t care if people use it in the privacy of their own home and don’t want them jailed. But to call it medicinal is confusing vulnerable people including children and the mentally ill. It will lead to widespread use and it is sad to see that happen. The fact that it helps a few will not provide solace to those it kills, through DUIs and the bodily effects. As a mother of a ten year old, I don’t want to see her get addicted. And please, a lot of us in opposition used pot in the past and know all to well how little we achieved while stoned. It is simply a fad and after the death of a couple of hundred people we will repeal the law. Let medicine study it, find out what components if any help, and figure out how to implement the helpful aspects without leading to serious CNS side effects.

68 peer reviewed studies from 1990-2009
78% of those studies found cannabis to be favorable or neither pro nor con
10 of those studies are double blind
If you were really a doctor you would know that cannabis does not “turn your brain to mush and kill you” That is so 1937 reefer madness propaganda… we’re way passed that these days.
If you were really a doctor you would also know that cannabis is less addictive than caffeine. Yeah, it’s less addictive than drinking your refreshing coke. This was the study done by a real live PhD:

Oh and your “smoking marijuana causes lung cancer” That was also dispelled long long ago. Actually it was found that long term marijuana smokers had a lower incidence of lung cancer than non smokers:
(marijuana and cancer risk) “Nonetheless, and contrary to our expectations, we found no positive associations between marijuana use and lung or UAT cancers … Despite several lines of evidence suggesting the biological plausibility of marijuana use being carcinogenic (1), it is possible that marijuana use does not increase cancer risk, as suggested in the recent commentary by Melamede.”

“Investigators also did not report a positive association between cannabis use and increased incidence of upper aerodigestive tract (UAT) cancers. The five-year trial was sponsored by the US National Institutes of Health (NIH).”
or
Tashkin’s findings reaffirm the results of prior case-control studies dismissing a causal link between cannabis use and certain types of lung and upper aerodigestive tract (UAT) cancers. These include: a 2001 John Hopkins University hospital-based case-control study that found neither “lifetime use” nor “ever use” of cannabis were associated with head, neck or lung cancer in younger adults; a 2004 University of Washington case-control study that found “no association” between cannabis use and incidents of oral cancer, regardless of how long, how much or how often individuals had used it; and a 1997 Kaiser Permanente retrospective cohort study that found that cannabis use was not associated with increased risks of developing tobacco-use related cancers of the lung and upper aerodigestive tract or other cancers in men and women who used marijuana but did not smoke tobacco.
“The most remarkable aspect of this study is that its findings are, in fact, unremarkable,” Armentano said. “As has been previously reported by the US Institute of Medicine and others, there is no conclusive evidence that marijuana causes cancer in humans, including those cancers generally related to tobacco use.”
Put that in your pipe and smoke it !
Marijuana doesn’t cause cancer Doc it heals it. You are telling me you actually passed the Medical Exam??? WOW. I worked under five oncologist here in Colorado, and one NP. As well as with the cancer patients we all treated as a team. Seems to me that you are on that team that is fueling our pill popping nation that statistics and “SCIENTIFIC FACTS” PROVE KILL PATIENTS DAILY THEY ARE BEING PUT INTO THEIR GRAVES FROM PRESCRIPTIONS THAT YOU SEEM TO SUPPORT. If that is how you look at patient care I so wanna know your name so I never come to see you nor any member of my family or friends. You failed to remember patients come to us in the medical field because they trust us. How about the patient that had no relief from the marinol only bad side effects that made their head feel so spacing it made a grown man cry. Or “DOC” how about the patient that is so constipated from the narcotics you docs flush through them they are balled up crying. MARIJUANA RELIEVES THOSE SYMPTOMS BY THE WAY. Or here’s one more for you. HOW ABOUT THE PATIENT THAT SAT IN MY LAB CHAIR CRYING ASKING ME WHERE CAN HE GET MEDICAL MARIJUANA. HE SAID FOR GOD SAKE HOLLY I AM DYING ALL I WANT IS TO EAT AND THIS MARINOL IS WICKED.What would you have told that patient?? Your pharmaceuticals are safer ??? HAHAHAHA !!! I’ve seen it first hand dear. You have no respect from me from the position you hold remember every prescription you write effects that patients life….from the side effects to hell the liver goes through. You should also google “ENDOCANNABINOID SYSTEM” YOU HAVE ONE TOO.
Educate yourself for the sake of the patients you are treating, if you’re really a doctor…I so hope not.
How about the patients that are given methadone and can’t eat for days????
Or the patients who’s cancer was killed by cannabis treatment….
where did you go to school?
Sharster you are so full of it. Nice feign on being in the medical field though.
By the way folks if there is anyone out there looking for a good reputibale doc who support MMJ I’m sure our MMJ community can help since we have doctors like this out there. Remember please, there are doctors who have educated themselves on the endocannabinoid system and MARIJUANA IS MEDICINE. It got me off of taking 15 pills at bed time, hey I don’t need a cane anymore. For patient testimonials go to MOMS4MARIJUANA.COM……..WE SUPPORT LEGALIZATION AND EDUCATION OF MARIJUANA AND HEMP…….BECAUSE THE SCIENCE IS ALREADY THERE MY FRIENDS!
Yay Holly!
I not only support MMJ, but the full legalization of Marijuana. I support making it a legal recreational drug — just like alcohol. Give me marijuana over alcohol ANY DAY!! Give me MMJ over narcotic RX ANY DAY!! I’d rather deal with a pothead than an alcoholic, and rather deal with medical marijuana user than narcotic prescription user.
I highly suspect that the “Doctors” who are so against MMJ probably have large investments in pharmaceutical companies.
