The city councilman is being encouraged to run for mayor in April 2011 through a recently created page on Facebook called “Recruit Sean Paige for Mayor.”
As of 5:30 p.m. today, 36 people “like” the page.
Remember, a similar effort on Facebook landed Betty White a hosting gig on Saturday Night Live.
Paige, who was appointed to fill a vacant council seat after former Councilman Jerry Heimlicher resigned, said it was “fun and flattering” that people would ask him to run.
“Yes, I would consider it,” he said. “I’m sure my candidacy would scare the hell out of the establishment in the city, but that’s not such a bad thing in my view.”
Paige said he’s going to wait and see who else decides to run.
But the two people who have made their candidacy official — defense contractor Buddy Gilmore and Dave Munger, president of the Council of Neighbors and Organizations — are not “going to bring the sort of ideas and substance to the race that I would like to see,” Paige said.
“If somebody better comes out of the woodwork that I think will bring leadership that is in lockstep with local values, then I’m happy to defer to someone else,” he said.
“But right now, I don’t see anybody who has stepped forward that I think will bring that kind of leadership,” Paige added. “If the city has been lacking something, it’s been leadership that is in tune with local values. It often seems like some of the leaders have been out of sync with what the general populace wants.”
Paige, the former editorial page editor of The Gazette, would have to seek election even if he wants to remain a councilman because his appointment ends in April.
The “Recruit Sean Paige for Mayor” page was created by Daniel Cole, a law school student and friend of Paige’s who is involved in local politics.
“Tell Sean to gear up for battle,” the Facebook page states. “Let’s send a real limited-government conservative to City Hall!”
In a text message, Cole said he started the page “because I believe in Sean’s vision for Colorado Springs. Because I want to watch him build Freedom City, USA.”
