Last week, former mayoral candidate Mitch Christiansen referred to the Gill Foundation as a bunch of “homos” in a private e-mail in which he shared his perspective on the election.
Today, Christiansen shared with the Gazette a separate, 3-week-old e-mail that mayoral candidate Buddy Gilmore sent to Christiansen and the other, more conservative candidates.
The March 6 e-mail included a picture of candidate Richard Skorman wearing a shiny gold suit at the Carnivale Parade in Manitou Springs with the following line: “Fast forward: 2012 Colorado Springs Gay Pride Parade?”
“Buddy: Remove me from your email lists immediately!” Christiansen told Gilmore today in an e-mail.
“I do not want to be included in your position and beliefs as a homophobe,” he wrote. “It’s too bad you have to take this position in this election.”
Gilmore said he didn’t mean any harm.
“I thought it was funny – great suit and a great picture of Richard campaigning,” Gilmore said in an e-mail
“I did think it would look great in the annual Gay Pride Parade, as it is typically a very colorful parade. No different than talking about Brian and his Superman suit showing up during Halloween,” he said.
“We have all tried to poke fun at each other during the campaign and keep things light-hearted. It certainly wasn’t meant to be anything more than that,” he added.
Gilmore also took a swipe at Christiansen.
“Mitch sent me this picture earlier this morning, and I’m not sure why he is trying to make an issue out of this,” he said. “I guess he’s not through lashing out.”
Christiansen is discovered to be a bigot, and his defense is that another candidate is also a bigot? Disgusting.

I accidentally came in contact with Buddy Gilmore at a wine shop in Manitou. He was holding court. The amount of “smug” he put out was overwhelming. I couldn’t get the stench out of my clothes for days. He kind of reminded me of Boss Hogg. You know….count your fingers if he shakes your hand.
Christiansen displayed his true character with his petty chirades and badmouthing.
It will follow him around for years.
What a miserable pathetic old curmudgeon he has grown into.

So, we see that Buddy nails the trifecta: he can be malicious, cowardly AND baldly disingenuous. Just what we need more of around here.
From Wikipedia… nowhere is Carnival (or “Carnivale”) associated with Gay Pride festivals, the Gill Foundation, Pride Fest, or any other GLTB entity. Mardi Gras is our country’s biggest Carivale.

It was certainly a tactless email sent by Buddy Gilmore. Would I go so far as to label Buddy a homophobe based on this one email? No. Would I say this email shows that Buddy has poor taste and made a bad decision? Yes.
Compared to most of the mayor candidates Buddy Gilmore is not too bad. Not great, but not too horrible. Christiansen, Bahr, and Gallagher are far worse. Just look at their responses to FoF’s survey question 8.

I wonder if Gilmore or “others” you think like him and think this is just fun humor would later react the same if they were now the Mayor of Colorado Springs and a City employee made a similar lame and off color remark “just to have a little humor!” Don’t think so.

You know, according to some studies, drunken wedding anniversaries promote more sodomy than Gay Pride parades.
A misleading headline, of course…but since most of the ruling Party members are both homophobes and illiterate, no harm done.
Not sure what the big to-do is all about..does anyone really take Christiansen or Gilmore seriously? If they do, I think that’s a much bigger issue. As for being a homophobe..I don’t think either of them is homophobic, just ignorant and not very politically savvy.. Gays live and work in this town..and they vote here, too. The sooner this town’s elected officials realize that, the better for all our citizens. Civil unions are in our future, embrace it Colorado Springs.
Does it bother any of the free thinking, rational people of CS that the majority of Americans are starting to believe that CS is made up almost entirely of brainwashed, short sighted, irrational evangelical Christians who are waiting for the rapture. CS lost out on hosting a major conference because of the insistence that religion be shoved into people faces when they visit. I would suggest that people start waking up in CS.
Sounds like they could all benefit from the max daily dosage of Risperdal.

Why is it when hate speech directed toward the gay community is slammed and yet the gay community can call anyone who doesn’t like them a “homophobe”?
I have a gay son, and I love him. I don’t agree with him about the life he chose and we agree to disagree and still have a good relationship. Others in the gay community would call me a “homophobe” yet I don’t fear them, any of them, nor does their lifestyle scare me, yet I am considered a “homophobe”, and they say they don’t want special rights, only equal rights. So tell me when is the last hate crime leveled on a gay person by directing hate speech toward those like me?
What a jerk.
It never ceases to amaze me that so many people running for office turn into boorish buffoons, especially with their attempts to assassinate the character of opponents with intimations that someone is gay or favors gay issues. Just shut the hell up and leave it alone, it has NO place in politics.
Is Gilmore of the Dobson crowd where hating on gays and gay issues seems their reason for living? Creeps!
Using the term ‘homophobe’ is pretty mild as far as ‘hate speech’ goes, and as far as I know, hate speech is still protected speech.
I’d like to thank Mitch Christiansen & Buddy Gilmore. It’s refreshing to see bigots who are so open about their prejudice. It makes it easy to know who not to vote for.
There’s no way in the world that I’ll ever vote for either of you for anything. We don’t need anymore bigots, childish name callers, or homophobes involved in Colorado Springs politics.
I’m forwarding this piece to everyone I know in Colorado Springs. I think these men really underestimate just how tired citizens are of the hatred and division. Come election day, I hope they find out.

Yep hate speech is protected speech, unless you yell the “N” word to a black man from a white man, then it is a crime. Yell the “F” word to a gay man from a straight man and it is a crime, but getting in my face and telling me that I am a “homophobe” is ok in the eyes of the law.
The only thing the supreme court said can have hate speech is that nutcase anti-military church who can call everyone who is in our wars a “fag”.

It is quite absurd of anyone to call someone gay because they wear a brightly colored costume in a Carnivale parade. What’s the matter with these “men”?

Brian Bahr for Mayor.
@ManitouMom: I agree with your point about how former City Council hasn’t advanced the City into the place of desire for companies, it hasn’t aided our national reputation nor has it pomoted job growth here in town. This is why I won’t be voting for Richard Skorman and Tom Gallagher, although I think very highly of these men.
Gallagher and Skorman are politicians from the past. Skorman was on City Council twice before he was elected to vice-mayor. Gallagher has served two terms on City Council and is currently a councilman.
I’m voting for a change in our city culture. I’m voting for fresh, common sense and bipartisan perspectives. I’m voting for Brian Bahr.
Brian Bahr is another Lionel Rivera. I won’t be voting for him.
Bahr is just another developer.

Yet right there in paragraph 3 on Bahr’s “about” page, he wants you to know about his 2 year “Spanish speaking mission in Southern California” where he “shared messages about the Gospel of Jesus Christ”. Thanks for that .. now what about the roads?
It’s also interesting to note that Bahr appears to be a Mormon. It’s very interesting how the Evangelical view of Mormonism has shifted these last 4 years especially. Twenty years ago, Evangelicals widely viewed Mormonism as a cult. Now that Mormons are “in bed” with Evangelicals on socially conservative issues like gay marriage, all of a sudden Evangelicals and Mormons are good friends … nothing works better to heal 100+ years of bitter divisiveness than finding a common (gay) enemy to hate together, eh boys?
Skorman is innovative and creative. As a councilman and vice-mayor, he was a fantastic and unique voice rising out of the developer choked sea of mediocrity. He deserves his shot at the top. If anybody deserves the heave ho, it’s the builders.
Brian Bahr? No thanks. I seriously considered him until he aligned himself with Pat Boone.
Pat Boone has been doing robo calls for Bahr. Boone has stuck his nose in races in other parts of the country and said some really nasty, divisive things. Until Brian Bahr denounces Boone, no way.
Additionally, Bahr is a developer. We don’t need to be taxed into the ground to subsidize roads and sewers to further enrich housing developers who don’t want to spend their own money, but are happy to spend ours and pocket the profits.
Vote for a developer and that’s what we’ll end up with – even more public debt we can’t afford to line the private pockets of people who don’t want to pay their own way.
I’m not sure who I will be voting for yet, but it won’t be Bahr or Gilmore.
If my kids told were the subjects of those emails it would considered “bullying”, but when ‘adults’ do it, it’s just an attempt at humor? Boys will be boys? BS! Christiansen; Bahr and their kind are just big bullies hiding behind their crosses. But that’s what bullies do when they don’t have a leg to stand on. Point out everyone else’s flaws so maybe no one will pay attention to theirs.
Adopting a baby from China shouldn’t be a campaign point. How about adopting a baby from the good ol’ USA? How about adopting one of those thousands of unwanted babies that are born in this country into poverty, partial thanks to all your oh-so-Christian politics… But then, fewer people are going to gush over a poor little AIDS baby the way they will over a cute little Chinese baby. Geez – it’s a baby, not a chihuahua and none of them are Paris Hilton…
This is a city of a half million people and no jobs. Who gives a crap if we have high end shopping and big fancy houses when our infrastructure is shot! Anyone who thinks they can be the head of a city this size had better get over the gay-thing. If all a candidate wants to do is spout his ‘christianity’ then he’s going for the wrong job – go find a church that needs a new deacon or something. The mayor of this city needs to be able to work with ALL people, whether he approves of them or not.
I’m proud to be on Brian Bahr’s campaign. I’m pleased that both Bahr and Skorman are keeping their campaigns clean and positive, especially when the political climate and social atmosphere is not. I wish Mr. Skorman all the best on his campaign.
Bahr is bought and paid for – which SHOULD conflict with his Christian values… but that doesn’t really seem to matter much.
