Colorado Springs city employees received the following email today:
Mayor Steve Bach and Chief of Staff Steve Cox want to let City employees know that at the discretion of your immediate supervisors, you are encouraged to take a short break on Monday afternoon to enjoy the festivities at the finish line of the USA Pro Cycling Challenge Prologue!
The Local Organizing Committee recommends heading toward the finish line at Colorado and Cascade around 3:20 p.m. on Monday to be there for the final top riders coming through.
This is going to be a great event to showcase Colorado Springs to both visiting cycling fans and a national TV audience. The event will also have a significant positive impact on the local economy. Experience Colorado Springs reports this is typically a very slow weekend for hotels with schools starting back, but this weekend most of the large hotels are sold out!
Hope you can get out and enjoy not only the race on Monday but also the many ancillary events going on this weekend around town brought to you by the Pikes Peak Cycling Society. The calendar of events can be found at www.pikespeakcyclingsociety.org.
That’s a good boss. We should all be proud to have those races here!
Good for him. I remember when schools back in the 40s and 50s piped in the World Series to classes. Also the TV in the auditorium was set up and tuned in to the series.
wow…isn’t that big of him…
I think everybody realizes the magnitude of this race whether you follow pro cycling or not. An event expected to bring over a million people to our state and recognition of our city on a world level, just what the economy needs. We should do this more often. I also think every employer should give their employees time off for a community event like this one, not just city employees. What does that have to do with anything anyway, nice try to get everybody worked up over city employees Gazette.
Mike,
What are you talking about? I posted the email verbatim, and the headline summed up the email.
How is posting the email an attempt by The Gazette “to get everybody worked up” about city employees?
The mayor is giving city employees a little time off to enjoy the festivities at the finish line. I think most people — or at least those who aren’t conspiracy theorists — would see that as good news.

Paid or not? Just kidding they deserve it!
Letting your employees off to watch a bicycle race isn’t exactly efficient management is it? Bach isn’t the one paying for the time off, the taxpayer is.
Note to Mayor … You don’t need to include your chief of staff in this . To me it diminishes the office of Mayor . You’re in charge not him … hmmmm.. maybe , maybe not ?
@Niel: reread the next-to-last paragraph. This event brings visitors who pay taxes, starting with (and lot limited to) bed and car fees. You seem to ignore, and sorely underestimate those taxpayers.
Niel’s idea of efficient management would be to discourage outside tourism and force city residents to pay the difference. Should we not vote to stop all major youth soccer tournaments, the State Games, Pikes peak Hill Climb and marathon, and all national Olympic team exhibition mathces at the OTC?
I believe they should push the race back by one hour, therefore making the end of the finish line set for 4:20.
That would attract a different and diverse crowd to blend in with the City employees and those tourists.
Victory cigar, anyone?
Nothing wrong with this in my view. Besides the local media, there will probably be many other media outlets represented here to cover this sports story. And if there are more people in the area of the finish line, it connotes a heightened interest in both the event and our area for the cameras. Plus, many city employees, as well as other folks who work downtown may simply be interested to see this event right under their noses.
