I’ve read through the mayor’s proposed budget and found it to be a reasonable proposal for the time we are living in. It includes money for police and fire training of new recruits, and generally keeps the status quo for spending with the present budget. Sure, there are things on everyone’s wish list that they’d like to have, but the economy next year is generally thought to be flat, so I hope the city council will not try to add a lot of additional spending to the budget.
who cares what paige thinks?
A pity Mr. Paige is no longer a member of Council. I can’t understand how the voters in his district could let such talent go to waste.
Thank you Sean for this well written email to the City Council. We must reel-in the temptation during these difficult times to increase the revenue forecast as we have with previous administrations. It is time as we have said for four years to tighten the belt of government and balance our budget to a true Zero and not a theoretical one as required by the State.
The real issue for City Council is that all departments are producing budgets that show an increase in City utility rates. CSU is asking for a 6% raise above all the others next year to meet their overhead costs. These increases are killing the General fund as well as the Citizens! Parks and Rec will see a 24% rate increase over last year just to water our parks? The General fund as you are aware receives approx. 31 million per year from CSU as Surplus funds these are payments in lieu of taxes allowed by the City Charter. If City Council who is the Utility board would just so No to the increases in rates and tell Utilities to cut their overhead, we would save Thousands on the bottom line of the City Budget, we could put more boots on the ground both police and fire.
I care what Paige thinks, because he is so often so reasonable. I’m also very glad that we have a Conservative Strong Mayor, someone who recognizes that tax increases hurt real people in very serious ways.
As a steward of our tax dollars, I very much prefer Mayor Bach to past City Councils. Paige fought hard for principled governance. I sometimes disagreed with his principles, but I always admired his ability to fight for them.
Bravo to Mayor Bach for his stated intention of eliminating “golden parachutes” – when so many are looking for work, it is sheer lunacy to offer so many employment incentives.
We should also consider saving the money budgeted for the search for a new Police Chief: establish reasonable criteria to judge the interim Chief, give him 6-9 months to show his “stuff”, and hire from within – always a good morale booster for the current staff.
