City Council’s pay became a hot topic this week after Councilman Tim Leigh advocated a $96,000-a-year salary for council members.
Councilwoman Brandy Williams weighed in on the topic again today on her Facebook wall.
Her comment earned her the spot on today’s Quote of the Day.
“My $6,250 (annual salary) does not afford me the luxury of bacon,” she wrote.
Here is the full text of Williams’ post:
“Back to the Bacon.
It was a sign of wealth that a ‘man’ (this was back in the day) could, “bring home the bacon.” When visitors came over, they would hang up their bacon to show off. They would cut off a little to share with guests and would all sit around and chew the fat.
So if you ever come into my office and there is bacon hanging on wall, you’ll know I’m no longer on City Council. My $6,250/year does not afford me the luxury of bacon.”
As one of her Facebook commenters posted: That must have been a terrible surprise once she took office.
Brandy, if you could not afford to do the job then why did you run and accept the office?
You just displayed to everyone in C-Springs the problem with the council, there are too many people on it that are unqualified and have no idea how to plan their own lives let alone plan for a major city.
Council members like you and Lisa C should have not been elected to the board. You both should have known that given your life’s circumstances, experience and position you could not fulfill your obligations to the city..
Perhaps you should do yourself and the city a favor and resign right now and let someone with the talent, experience and wherewithal take over so you can take care of yourself & your family. It would be selfish to make them suffer because of a bad financial decision by you.
You should have had the foresight not to run for this office and should now have the class to resign rather than beg us for money to feed your family. Trying to increase your own personal finances is not what you were elected to do.
Now go back to work or quit.

Everyone that ran knew the pay was $6k. Now they start complaining. That’s bad form. They can easily resign. I believe we have people that would have considered running but chose not to because of the salary. And so I actually think a real salary for a full time position may be something to consider in the future. However, the median salary in 2009 for the Springs was $43,359 (QoLIreport http://www.ppunitedway.org/ourimpact/qli) I bet the median income has gone down since 2009. But that’s another issue. Now we have Leigh asking for $96k. We have people in our city that are really hurting right now. So much so they’d be thrilled to get a $6k paycheck to feed their children and have a roof over their head for another night. As they say, there is a time for everything, and this isn’t it. In fact, let’s cut council seats down to districts only, no at-large positions. Keep the President and Pro-Tem for returning members. That saves the citizens $24k and a lot of headache from listening to the whining.
So, how much money do these people spend on their campaigns? Thousands? Tens of thousands?
And we’re supposed to feel sorry for them with their tiny salaries?
This city is becoming the very definition of “laughing stock”. I get the feeling it’s not about the betterment of our infrastructure, it’s just another rung on their social status ladder, and it all makes me want to hurl!
well, maybe the council should LIVE IT UP, and get on with it!
If we all got together and created a “City Council Bacon Fund” would it be a pork-barrel project?
I am soooo Sorry Ms.Williams you can’t afford the Bacon, go get another JOB like the rest of us have had to do. Most citizens don’t have the luxary to even run for city council but you on the other did.

Drunk cop and kid at hooters you are a moron. Get a life stop blogging on every story. what the hell do you do for the community? Brandy and Lisa are more educated and qualified then half the Council. At least there asking questions and working hard.
Im a firefighter, what do you do for the community? Not that that matters to anyone but you.
Brandy and Lisa are great examples of people that want to serve on the council not for the city, but for what they can take from the city.
Lisa purposely silences the only military vote on the Memorial Hospital board because of a personal problem with that man. She also proudly openly trades her favoritism on matters for stupid little favors such as concert tickets.
Brandy gets elected and is now devoting her time to secure an $88,000 raise for herself rather than attending to the city business because she does not like the pay.
So you are right they are both working hard, for themselves.
When are you going to start ask questions about our most unqualified and enormously greedy members of the city council and stop shooting the messenger that brings these facts into a forum for discussion?

All the councilmembers agreed to his removal so it must have been for a good reason. look what’s going on with the task force now, what a joke. The folks here at McCabe’s Tavern think you are doing a great job and that you do deserve to be better compensated for this position. The position of a city council woman or man in this city is extremely important and you deserve to be taken care of. The Bacon is on us at McCabe’s for you. Come down and see us. When you have time. Shes part of the mess with the Memorial task force, she doesn’t support the new Mayor, she basically told the new city attny she doesn’t trust a thing he says 3 weeks into him taking the job and has used tax payer money to take a bunch of trips, she wouldnt support Tabor, and now has voted to give utility workers a pay raise and increase our utility bill. So I ask you Greg, other than being the Indys go to girl, name one thing she has done?
