A motion by Councilman Val Snider on Tuesday to postpone a proposal for surveillance cameras downtown died on a 3-5 vote.
Only Snider and Council President Scott Hente and President Pro Tem Jan Martin voted in favor of the motion.
Councilwoman Lisa Czelatdko is absent.
I just realized the full scope of how spend crazy some members of City Council are.
The true cost of the cameras include the costs for paying officers to monitor them – as those officers won’t be doing the jobs they were doing the week before.
Why has no one on the council asked the chief what his staffing plan is for monitoring the cameras? Will they be monitored 24×7?
It is like buying a car and then being surprised that you have to pay for gas, insurance, and oil changes.
They want volunteers that they train to watch the cameras. City Council does not appear to have done their homework into the cost vs. benefit of having cameras though. For example, no one has brought up the fact that in cities that have cameras are now experiencing a rise in crime in areas outside of the areas that have cameras. All the cameras have achieved to do is push crime to other areas outside of town.
