The Colorado Springs Fire Department’s most senior firefighter is still on paid administrative leave.
Battalion Chief R.C. Smith, Jr. — whose father, Richard Smith, was the city’s fire chief from 1979 to 1989 — was placed on paid administrative leave in Feb. 17 pending an investigation.
City officials won’t release any other details.
“It’s a pending personnel issue,” Deputy Chief of Support Services Tommy Smith (no relation) said Monday.
R.C. Smith joined the Fire Department nearly four decades ago.
He had been working as one of three battalion chiefs in the Operations Division until he was assigned to the department’s Training Division for unspecified reasons last year.
R.C. Smith is paid about $8,195 a month.
