The Colorado Springs City Council plans to ask city voters to approve leasing Memorial Health System to University of Colorado Health in a special election Aug. 28.
The council will hold a special meeting on Wednesday immediately following the Utilities Board meeting to set the date of the election.
The terms of the lease are apparently still being negotiated.
In its proposal to the city, UCH offered $74 million upfront and then $5.6 million per year, plus a profit sharing agreement, for a 40-year lease of the city-owned hospital.
After setting the date of the election, the council plans to go into executive session to receive:
(1) advice and negotiation consultation with the City Attorney regarding Memorial Health System, and (2) advice and consultation with the City Attorney regarding potential litigation matters that are subject to negotiations, developing strategy for negotiations and instructing negotiators.
“in a special election…”
Guess they want to hold down the turnout. They must be worried about it being voted down if it is included on the November ballot.
The way this whole matter has been handled stinks to high heaven. Somebody must be getting a huge pay-off.
Why can’t this be on the Novemember ballot? It would save money and it would give citizens more time to understand the terms of the agreement. Why the nefarious rush? It doesn’t seem to be in the taxpayer’s interests!
If they want a special election, it states in the proposal that University has to pay for it, so it dosen’t matter when it happens.
Seems like the city officials already decided that your votes done matter. They have given University the keys to the hospital already. University is making the decisions already. The MHS leadership has to ask University if they can hire staff or add or change programs. Rush this through before a real newspaper looks into how the citizens were screwed in this deal by Back and his people. Not sure when the people of Colorado Spring voted to sell MHS but it is already gone.
wow 71 million what a steal and thought it was worth 500,000 million? just wonder how much the citizens or the city council will have control when its all worked out from fort collins . Cant believe the beloved gem of the people is being leased. Shame on city council for not looking for a CEO and just fix it , so be you get what you deserve.
Lets see…we fire the old board and then decide to accept their recommendation to lease the place and then rush to special election before anyone knows what we are getting into…this is the best we can expect from our leaders so shame on us
At Mayor Bach’s townhall on 5/2 he was asked about a UCH/Pourdre Valley article in the Denver Post which included MHS as already being in the fold. He blew it off! So,folks, the fix is in as it has always been since day one. Vote ‘NO!’ in August.
Vote NO and make sure the elected officials know that we are not stupid people in Colorado Springs. This is a giveaway to meet some under the table deal that Bach and his cronies have. No wonder why he blew off the question at the Town Hall. I know him will and have to wash my hand and count my fingers every time I shake his hand.
Bach promised transparency and when media asks him questions he tells them to get a lawyer and sue him for the info he doesn’t want to share.
The only Councilmembers he talks to is Bennet, Dougan, and Leigh and they are so far up his bottom it’s sick. Even at his town halls if someone challenges something he says he gets nasty and says “come look at our budget”. I’m so sick of hearing there is no money. Bach sure has money for all his new staff and downtown cameras and everything else he has come asking for. Shame on Council for approving every request. They are nothing but a bunch of rubber stampers giving our money away. Get some backbone City Council. You represent us, don’t forget it.
There seems to be many negative replies to this article. You have people making statements about, payouts, University of CO Health stealing Memorial Hospital and “Why not have the vote on this in the Nov. 2012 elections”. \
My feelings of letting the Univ. of CO taking over is a plus for the citizens of El Paso County and the rest of the state. Looking at the new medical center in the Aurora area that will include the new VA Hospital is a master piece of medical advancements. To add Memorial would just be an addition to the health system to the citizens of CO.
As for the voting; a waste of time and money, we don’t need this, I think most people here in El Paso Cty and City of Colo. Spgs are wanting this marriage of the health systems. My advice to the City Council and the Mayor, just go ahead with the deal, it would probably be the only good move that they have demonstrated to us since the inplacement of a “Strong Mayor” and some of the moronic deals they have done in the past.
