The Fire Department’s most senior firefighter is still on administrative leave.
But R.C. Smith, Jr. is no longer collecting a paycheck from taxpayers.
Smith was placed on paid administrative leave in February pending an unspecified investigation.
On Tuesday, Tommy Smith, the fire department’s deputy chief of support services, said his status has changed to “unpaid administrative leave.” He didn’t specify when.
“Beyond that I don’t have any additional information because it is a pending personnel issue,” Tommy Smith said.
R.C. Smith and Tommy Smith are not related.
But R.C. Smith does have family ties to the Colorado Springs Fire Department.
His father, Richard Smith, was the fire chief from 1979 to 1989.
Do we (the taxpaying, therefore his paycheck paying people of Colorado Springs) get to know why this person had been put on Administrative Leave (with pay) from February through the end of May? Further, what is the “secret” that must be so “hush-hush” that he is now on “unpaid leave?”
What happened to the concept of transparent governing/running of our City?
Who was he sexually harassing?
Stu I will back this man 100% he was not sexually harassing anyone. I have known RC Smith most of his career, he is a great firefighter and a great officer. He stands head and shoulders above those that persecute him. I have seen him save lives as a paramedic and I have seen him command large fires with calm dignity. You throw out sexual harassment far too casually you ass hat. Do his job stand in a fire, save a life, you dick. Chief Brown is not his match and neither is Tommy Smith, Steve Dubay, Teddy Collis or any of this administration. I have seen this man work and he can out work any of these supposed leaders of the CSFD.
Well stated, Tim!
These “assumption geniuses” are everywhere!

Sorry Mr. Chacon that guy just made me mad, I thought I was pretty controlled
How do you REALLY feel, Tim? I don’t know the guy, but I’ve seen several people over the years mess up 30 year careers with one silly mistake. I’m not saying he did anything wrong. Many have been railroaded into hell simply because someone didn’t like them.
So, A has been drunken firefighter wish to call me names and try playing the hero card. No problem, I shall just consider the source, as I know you would never dare say such a thing in person.
So tells us what was he doing, it has to something very despicable.
Stu, Don’t you have a hole to crawl back into?
Well stated Tim. I also worked with Chief Smith for many years and agree with your thoughts. I also consider him one of my closest friends. He will be there for me in the end no matter what, as I will be for him. I will stand by his side through thick and thin. Just Dave!
transparency is just smoke and mirrors nothing concrete to those ideals.
this has been a weak administration (CSFD) on a witch hunt trying to eliminate an individual that wants to stand up for the rank and file. Doesn’t want to follow the establishment rule by following the blind leaders that are currently in charge.

Stu already does have a hole to crawl back into… it’s called mommy’s basement. That’s where he’s living and acting so tough behind the anonymity of his keyboard.
I assume that this is firefighters defending one of their own and others’ accusing. I would just like to know what he is accused of doing as 3 months of paid suspension followed by unpaid suspension has to make one wonder just what he is being investigated for.
