Rove will crank it up on the Jeff Crank Show tomorrow

May 27th, 2011, 9:52 am by

Karl Rove, former deputy chief of staff and senior advisor to former President George W. Bush, is scheduled to be on Jeff Crank’s radio show on 740 KVOR tomorrow morning.

“He will be on during the first segment from 8 until 8:15,” Crank said in an email.

In an invitation to his Facebook friends, Crank said he’ll have a “preview” of Rove’s visit to Colorado Springs next week and a “review” of the current Republican presidential candidates.

Crank will be broadcasting from Territory Days in Old Colorado City at the corner of 25th and Colorado Avenue between 8 a.m. and 10 a.m.

In addition to talking to Rove, Crank will discuss the lawsuit challenging the constitutionality of TABOR.

“The assault on taxpayers never stops,” he said on Facebook. “Now several politicians – including usual suspects Senator John Morse and former Representative Michael Merrifield have filed a federal lawsuit to end your right to vote on tax increases – as required by TABOR – the Taxpayer Bill of Rights. We’re going to fight back and tell you ways that you can become involved.”

Crank takes calls at 719-540-0740.

Just one request, folks: Please don’t accuse a certain reporter of being a puppy killer.

Separated at Birth: Michael Merrifield and Vladimir Lenin

April 7th, 2011, 4:27 pm by

Former state Rep. Micheal Merrifield lost in the race for City Council District 3, but he wins a spot in Separated at Birth.

Merrifield earns the spot for his resemblance to Russian revolutionary Vladimir Lenin.

Chamber reinforces ‘strong endorsement’ of Bach for mayor

April 6th, 2011, 4:50 pm by

The president and CEO of the Greater Colorado Springs Chamber of Commerce issued a statement to members today celebrating the victory of several candidates the chamber had endorsed.

“The voters gave us a Council that is ready to invigorate the economy, infuse new energy in helping our city reach its full potential, and most importantly, build the framework for an effective working environment to approach our challenges with common sense and reason,” Dave Csintyan said in the email.

“We have the right ensemble ready to roll up their sleeves to get things done in creating a thriving business climate along with much needed jobs for the community,” he wrote.

In the at-large City Council race, the chamber had endorsed Jan Martin, Sean Paige, Merv Bennett, Tim Leigh and Val Snider. All but Paige won election, according to unofficial results.

In the race for District 3, the chamber endorsed Lisa Czelatdko, who has maintained a slight lead over challenger Michael Merrifield since the first set of election results were released Tuesday night.

In District 2, the chamber endorsed Larry Bagley, who lost to Angela Dougan.

The chamber also endorsed Steve Bach for mayor. Bach finished in second place and will face Richard Skorman in a May 17 runoff.

“We look forward to a spirited runoff where the contrast between these two individuals will be very apparent to the voters,” Csintyan wrote.

“We reinforce our strong endorsement of Steve Bach for his expertise in galvanizing disparate groups into action and his ability to motivate others to get Colorado Springs pressing forward to a very promising future.”
Csintyan called Bach a “tested champion” who will foster a positive business climate.

“Steve Bach will be a strong ambassador for the best Colorado Springs can offer and will inspire others to join in spreading that vision,” he wrote. “Steve will clearly build tangible energy and excitement about our city.”

The political arm of the chamber paid for a TV ad encouraging voters to support the candidates the chamber had endorsed. It was the first time the chamber had done advertising of that magnitude for candidates.

Quote of the Day

April 4th, 2011, 3:09 pm by

“You’d have to ask a lot of people. I mean, you know, it really depends upon whether I’ve had my coffee yet or not.”

– El Paso County Public Trustee Tom Mowle said when asked whether he was a “crabby” person, which is what City Council candidate Lisa Czelatdko called Mowle after he informed her that he was supporting Micheal Merrifield.

Public trustee says Czelatdko made ‘up lies out of whole cloth’

April 4th, 2011, 1:30 pm by

A nasty war of words has erupted between El Paso County Public Trustee Tom Mowle and Lisa Czelatdko, who is running for the District 3 City Council seat in Tuesday’s election.

There’s more, but here’s a sneak peek: Czelatdko called Mowle a crabby “jerk” and a “big baby,” and Mowle accused Czelatdko of making “up lies out of whole cloth,” according to emails obtained by The Gazette.

The fight started when Czelatdko sent Mowle and others a message via Facebook this weekend in which Czelatdko asked for support “to win the District 3 council seat.”

Mowle says he declined and included a response along the lines of: “Why am I on this list?  Michael Merrifield is the best candidate for District 3.”

The message apparently set Czelatdko off.

“Wow, I knew you were crabby Tom but not such a jerk too!” Czelatdko said in a direct Facebook message to Mowle on Sunday. “Ill take me (sic) off your lists you big baby!”

The same day, Czelatdko sent members of the Pikes Peak Area Council of Governments’ Community Advisory Committee an e-mail chastising Mowle. Czelatdko and Mowle both serve on the committee.

“I would like the board to be aware that fellow PPACG CAC member, Tom Mowle, has sent me very unprofessional, hostile, and rude comments both personally and posted publicly on my facebook account,” Czelatdko wrote.

“Tom, as a citizen, I am so thankful that you are ending your role as a public servant because someone so close minded and bitter has absolutely no place dealing with the public or representing any of us citizens,” she wrote.

“Despite personal feelings towards someone, I would never disrespect, be cruel, or embarrass a fellow volunteer member. Its (sic) immature and it has no place on a volunteer board,” Czelatdko wrote, adding that having Mowle as the committee’s vice chair is “an embarrassment and mistake.”

One of the committee members, Trajn Boughan, reacted with disbelief.

“Lisa, please talk directly to Tom-M. There might be ‘identity theft’ of his name going on … who knows?” Boughan wrote Sunday night.

Mowle broke his silence this morning.

“Hate to get involved in politics from work, but this is getting a bit out of control,” he wrote in an email to committee members. “I am disappointed that Lisa would make up lies out of whole cloth and distribute them to my friends and colleagues.  Unfortunately, that requires me to respond.”

Mowle also told the group that Czelatdko has sent him “several emails to my work account” asking for his support.

“I emailed her: ‘Lisa, Please do not send campaign-related emails to my official email.  I also do not live in your district. Tom. As a tip, however, sending people almost the exact same email 3 times in one weekend will not leave the best first impression.’”

Mowle said he “politely” advised Czelatdko not to him send him emails at work.

“Politely?” Czelatdko responded in an email that went to all the committee members.  “I think anyone who has worked or sat with you on a board for 5 minutes knows exactly how you are Tom.”

Mowle also explained the exchange on Facebook in which Czelatdko called him a jerk and a big baby.

“I shared that response with some of my friends so they could see the kind of temperament Lisa has. Up until that point, I had no personal feelings positive or negative about Lisa,” he wrote. “But the ‘big baby’ response – to a posting simply sharing my support for her opponent – does not strike me as reflecting the civility – or, since she used the word below, maturity — I’d like to see on my City Council. That should have been the end of it, but now Lisa is escalating this with false, frankly libelous statements.”

In an interview, Mowle said he didn’t want to “escalate” the feud “if this is going to be embarrassing for Lisa.”

He added: “I guess campaigns are fairly stressful. I don’t know.”

Czelatdko did not return a phone call for comment or answer questions via Facebook.

Mayoral, council candidates take on medical marijuana tonight

March 21st, 2011, 9:23 am by

Two mayoral hopefuls and 10 City Council candidates are scheduled to speak tonight at the Colorado Springs Medical Cannabis Council‘s monthly networking event.

“Candidates will have a chance to speak about their campaign goals, and of course, the hot topic of medical marijuana in Colorado Springs,” Jessica Hogan, the council’s spokeswoman, said in an e-mail.

The event, which starts at 6:30 p.m., is at the Warehouse Restaurant and Gallery, 25 W. Cimarron.

It’s free and open to the public.

The two mayoral candidates scheduled to attend are Councilman Tom Gallagher, who spearheaded a medical marijuana task force along with Councilman Sean Paige, and businessman Richard Skorman.

The council candidates scheduled to attend are Paige, David Jensen, Michael Merrifield, Tony Carpenter, Dawn Lloyd and the so-called Reform Team: Ed Bircham, Douglas Bruce, Richard Bruce, Helen Collins and Gretchen Kasameyer.

“We invited everyone, so  hopefully more will attend tonight,” Hogan said.

Bach, Paige, Dougan and Czelatdko top vote-getters in straw poll

March 17th, 2011, 1:14 pm by

Steve Bach was the top vote-getter among mayoral candidates in a straw poll taken after last night’s forum at the Stargazers Theatre and Event Center.

Buddy Gilmore came in second, and Brian Bahr was a close third.

In the at-large race, Councilman Sean Paige topped the other candidates with 67 percent support, making him the top vote-getter in that category.

“While encouraging, it certainly won’t breed complacency, and I’ll be pushing hard in these last few weeks to reach out to every voter I can,” Paige said in an e-mail.

With 54 percent support, Brandy Williams came in second.

Angela Dougan emerged the winner among the District 2 candidates.

With 91 percent support, Lisa Czelatdko decimated Michael Merrifield in the race for District 3.

About 150 people attended last night’s forum.

Council candidate cashes in on vandalism

March 17th, 2011, 10:03 am by

City Council candidate Michael Merrifield turned an act of vandalism into a fundraising opportunity.

A couple of days after someone painted a mustache and goatee over Merrifield’s face on a campaign billboard along Colorado Avenue, Merrifield issued a fundraising challenge via e-mail and Facebook.

Merrifield, who is running against Lisa Czelatdko in District 3, promised to grow a real mustache and goatee if he collected $1,000 before March 16.

Only five days after issuing the challenge, he had raised more than $2,000.

“I got a two day growth as we speak,” he said this morning.

“I guess people think I look really good with a goatee and mustache,” he said.

Merrifield, who has been bald for about 35 years, said it doesn’t take him very long to grow facial hair.

“I think that’s the trade-off for not being able to grow it on your head. You grow it faster on your face,” he said. “It’ll be noticeable within a week.”

Merrifield has a single concern about the new look, though.

“The last time I had one, which was years ago, even then, it was pretty much white,” he said.

Merrifield said he plans to keep the facial hair at least until April 6.

“I’ll see how it looks on the day after the election, No. 1,” he said. “No. 2, I have to see what my girlfriend thinks about it. She has the final say.”

Campaign gets hairy as vandalism strikes Merrifield billboard

March 7th, 2011, 5:16 pm by

Talk about a hairy situation.

A vandal or vandals defaced a billboard promoting Micheal Merrifield‘s candidacy for City Council.

“I’m very angry,” Merrifield, who is running for the District 3 seat against Lisa Czelatdko, said in a telephone interview.

The billboard, which touts Merrifield as a “proven, energetic and innovative” leader, includes a picture of Merrifield smiling and standing in front of what appears to be Garden of the Gods.

A mustache and goatee were painted over Merrifield’s face.

“He could have at least put some hair on my head,” joked Merrifield, who has been bald for about 35 years.

The billboard is located just off the West Colorado Avenue bridge near America the Beautiful Park. To see it, you have to be driving east on Colorado.

“You can’t miss it,” he said. “That’ s a great place for a billboard.”

Merrifield, a former state representative, suspects the vandalism occurred Sunday night.

“It was in good shape yesterday,” he said.

When asked whether he suspects his opponent was involved, Merrifield said he didn’t know “and wouldn’t want to make that assertion.”

Coincidentally, a campaign sign advertising Czelatdko’s candidacy is hanging on a fence nearby.

Merrifield said he’s still not sure whether or not he should leave the billboard in the current condition.

“Any hair is better than no hair,” he said jokingly.

Separated at Birth: Lisa Czelatdko and Michelle Pfeiffer

February 15th, 2011, 10:56 am by

Lisa Czelatdko, who is running against former state Rep. Michael Merrifield in the race for City Council District 3, has been chosen for today’s Separated at Birth.

Czelatdko, a married mother of four, bears an uncanny resemblance to actress Michelle Pfeiffer.

“Oh my goodness,” Czelatdko said today. “I heard that a lot during my college years.”
