Separated at Birth: Ashleigh Banfield and Cindy Aubrey

October 30th, 2012, 10:26 am by

Ashleigh Banfield

While watching CNN’s live coverage of Hurricane Sandy last night, for a split second, it looked like Cindy Aubrey was in front of the camera.

But it was actually television journalist Ashleigh Banfield, who bears a striking resemblance to Aubrey, who is Mayor Steve Bach’s chief communications officer.

Not only do the two women look alike and have similar hairdos, both wear signature dark-framed glasses.

They also have journalism in their blood.

Banfield has worked in TV for years, and Aubrey used to be the news director for a local TV station.

Separated at Birth: Kayla Hogan and Heather Locklear

August 4th, 2011, 1:53 pm by

Kayla Hogan

Colorado Springs police dispatcher Kayla Hogan, who was arrested June 26 on suspicion of attempted vehicle theft involving a hot dog cart, is the subject of today’s Separated at Birth.

In her mugshot, Hogan resembles actress Heather Locklear — in her mugshot.

According to Gazette reporter Lance Benzel:

Hogan was hot on a bad guy’s trail – at least that’s what 28-year-old Kayla Hogan allegedly claimed when a Colorado Springs hot dog vendor said she tried to drive off in the pickup to which his snack cart was hitched.

“I’m commandeering your truck,” the vendor said he was told. “I’m after someone.”

Hogan, a dispatcher in the Colorado Springs police communications center, was arrested June 26 on suspicion of attempted vehicle theft, after a closing-time fracas outside the Copperhead Road Bar, 3330 N. Academy Blvd. Police say she pinched the hot dog vendor and twice punched a bar bouncer who came to his aid.

Separated at Birth: Michael Merrifield and Vladimir Lenin

April 7th, 2011, 4:27 pm by

Former state Rep. Micheal Merrifield lost in the race for City Council District 3, but he wins a spot in Separated at Birth.

Merrifield earns the spot for his resemblance to Russian revolutionary Vladimir Lenin.

Separated at Birth: Penelope Culbreth-Graft and Gary Busey

Penelope Culbreth-Graft

Penelope Culbreth-Graft left City Hall nearly a year ago.

But she hasn’t been forgotten.

The former city manager announced her resignation in March 2010 but then demanded severance pay a month later after claiming “constructive termination.”

Tonight, while watching Gary Busey in Celebrity Apprentice, Culbreth-Graft came to mind again, making her the latest person to be featured in Separated at Birth.

Separated at Birth: Ed Bircham and Grandpa Munster

February 18th, 2011, 11:20 am by

City Council candidate Ed Bircham shares more than a resemblance with actor Al Lewis, who played Grandpa Munster on the television series The Munsters.

Lewis was also a candidate for political office.

In 1998, he ran for governor of New York as a Green Party candidate.

“In that race he sought to be listed on the ballot as Grandpa Al Lewis, arguing that he was most widely known by that name,” according to an online bio.

“His request was rejected by the Board of Elections, a decision upheld in court against his challenge. Despite this setback, he achieved one of his campaign objectives. His total of 52,533 votes exceeded the threshold of votes set by New York law (50,000), and hence guaranteed the Green Party of New York an automatic ballot line for the next four years.”

Lewis died in 2006.

Separated at Birth: Lisa Czelatdko and Michelle Pfeiffer

February 15th, 2011, 10:56 am by

Lisa Czelatdko, who is running against former state Rep. Michael Merrifield in the race for City Council District 3, has been chosen for today’s Separated at Birth.

Czelatdko, a married mother of four, bears an uncanny resemblance to actress Michelle Pfeiffer.

“Oh my goodness,” Czelatdko said today. “I heard that a lot during my college years.”

Separated at Birth: Steve Bach and Robert Redford

February 2nd, 2011, 9:42 am by

Mayoral candidate Steve Bach has been nominated for Separated at Birth.

The person who nominated Bach this morning suggested three actors who resemble Bach: Michael Douglas, Clint Eastwood and Robert Redford.

“The Douglas pose is spot-on, even though Mr. Douglas may have tucked it up a bit to shave off a couple of years,” the nominator, who asked to remain anonymous, said today via e-mail.

“I think that Redford’s character lines are more apt,” he said.

So, here goes:

Separated at Birth: Richard Skorman and Groucho Marx

February 1st, 2011, 5:13 pm by

Richard Skorman may not be a cigar-smoking wisecracker with extra bushy eyebrows and an endless supply of one-liners.

But he does resemble Groucho Marx, making Skorman the perfect candidate for the second installment of Separated at Birth, a new item on the City Desk blog.

Separated at Birth: Buddy Gilmore and William Shatner

February 1st, 2011, 2:35 pm by

Buddy Gilmore

Today marks the beginning of a new item on the City Desk blog called “Separated at Birth.”

The item, similar to the Quote of the Day, will feature city officials, mayoral and City Council candidates and other movers and shakers in Colorado Springs and celebrities they resemble.

I’m open to suggestions, so e-mail your ideas, along with photos of the local person and the celebrity they resemble, to daniel.chacon@gazette.com.

Buddy Gilmore, a mayoral candidate who has a great sense of humor, will be the first target … I mean, the first person featured.

William Shatner

Gilmore is an easy choice, not only because he bears a striking resemblance to William Shatner but because someone recently told him he looked like “the guy that does the Priceline commercials.”

Up next: mayoral candidate Richard Skorman.
