Welcome home, City Councilman Tim Leigh.

Leigh, who was on vacation in Hawaii, arrived in Colorado Springs on Monday.

He said the first thing he saw when he turned on his phone was a tweet from a Gazette reporter about a new parody Twitter account that pokes fun at him.

The account, which calls Leigh a “flake” and Mayor Steve Bach’s “errand boy,” includes an unflattering picture of Leigh.

“That’s the very first thing I saw when I turned on my cell phone,” he said.

“I want to know where they found that picture. I want to get it reproduced and put that in my City Hall office because that’s how I feel about City Hall most of the time when (my colleagues) vote against me.”

Councilman targeted in parody Twitter account

January 14th, 2013, 12:06 pm by

City Councilman Tim Leigh is the target of a brand-new parody Twitter account that pokes fun at him.

The Twitter handle is @NotTimLeigh and describes the account as an attempt to channel the City Council’s “favorite flake” and Mayor Steve Bach’s “No. 1 errand boy.”

“No clue yet what I’ll be doing this week. Still waiting by the phone for @mayorstevebachto call. Hello! Fingers tapping! Sigh,” reads the first — and so far, the only — tweet by @NotTimLeigh.

The Twitter user did not immediately return a request seeking comment.

In case you’ve been living under a rock, Councilwoman Brandy Williams is an engineer.

During City Council and other meetings, Williams frequently reminds the public that she’s an engineer.

In fact, it’s turned into a joke.

During a recent Utilities Board meeting, Councilwoman Lisa Czelatdko, trying hard not to laugh out loud, motioned to Councilman Tim Leigh to keep quiet when Williams mentioned once again that she is an engineer.

Yours truly also sends out a tweet on Twitter every time Williams says she’s an engineer instructing his tweeps — jokingly, of course — to take a shot.

Councilman Bernie Herpin couldn’t resist playing along during an interview Thursday.

“While I’m not a professional engineer, I am an engineer by degree so it helps me understand what I need to do,” he said, jokingly.

Hente: Gawkers invade Mountain Shadows burn area

July 9th, 2012, 3:04 pm by

City Council President Scott Hente is asking the public to respect the privacy of people who live in the Mountain Shadows burn area.

“This weekend was like a parade,” said Hente, whose home was damaged by the Waldo Canyon Fire.

“I saw the police in a couple, many instances, actually, pull people over,” he said during Monday’s informal council meeting. “One was by my house.”

Mountain Shadows resident Tom Michel said onlookers are causing traffic back-ups.

“I was an unwilling parade participant yesterday while trying to get to my house,” Michel said via Twitter.

Hente said a lot of homes are going to be “wide open,” especially during renovations and rebuilding.

“With that many homes, it’s a target of opportunity,” he said.

While Bach was speaking, Utilities was tweeting

June 7th, 2012, 11:34 am by

While Mayor Steve Bach was talking about the need for Colorado Springs Utilities to pony up some dough for stormwater, the city-owned utility was tweeting about how much money it has already invested.

“From 2000-2011, our customers have invested $165 million in wastewater system improvements, sediment control and wetlands restoration,” read one tweet.

The mayor is making the city’s stormwater needs a priority.

Bach thinks he can find $7 million in the 2013 budget for stormwater. He also wants to take up to $7 million more from the 2012 budget if revenues come in higher than projected.

Bach also has asked the City Council to direct Colorado Springs Utilities to come up with an additional $12 million to $15 million.

In an interview in March, Utilities CEO Jerry Forte said the issue isn’t who is responsible for stormwater.

“The issue is more how to fund it. That’s the issue that we need to as a community wrestle with and decide,” he said.

“If Utilities were to fund it, it would obviously be something that would be passed on to utility ratepayers,” Forte added. “One way or another, there would need to be some revenue that would be raised to be able to do that.”

During Thursday’s press conference, Bach reiterated that Utilities should be involved.

While he was speaking, Utilities was tweeting away.

Here are their tweets in the order in which they were sent:

We recognize the need to manage storm flows in our waterways to protect people, property and our pipes that cross local waterways.

From 2000-2011, our customers have invested $165 million in wastewater system improvements, sediment control and wetlands restoration.

We’ve invested $40 million to the Fountain Creek District once SDS is delivering water to Colorado Springs in 2016.

We’ve allocated $2.2 million to Pueblo County for managing sedimentation in Fountain Creek in Pueblo.

We’ve allocated $300,000 to the Fountain Creek Watershed District for a flood control study and District administration.

A multi-million dollar project is under way to address sedimentation and erosion on a section of Fountain Creek in El Paso County.

We believe stormwater flows must be managed regionally, to fully protect our community’s investments.

Unmanaged storm flows outside of Colorado Springs city limits can jeopardize investments made within the city.

So far, we’ve identified approx. 241 capital projects for 2013 budget, only half of which can be funded at this time.

Approx. 30% of Springs Utilities budget is fuel, capital is 27.9% and labor is 17%.

Twitter not so tweet after all, city says

February 23rd, 2012, 5:55 pm by

Mayor Steve Bach has made a big deal out of using social media, such as Twitter and Facebook, to communicate with Colorado Springs residents.

When he announced a town hall meeting for Wednesday night, Springs resident Justin Burns went on the mayor’s Facebook page and suggested that Twitter would be “a great Q & A tool” to use for the event.

At least 200 million people actively use Twitter.

“Thank you Justin, that’s a great idea,” was the response.

But the mayor’s Communications Office didn’t chirp a single tweet.

The Gazette asked Chief Communications Officer Cindy Aubrey how many of her employees were at the town hall meeting and why no one — including a recent addition with supposed social media expertise — didn’t tweet from the event.

Here’s her response:

For the Town Hall meeting, we had John Leavitt, Mary Scott, Laura Benjamin, Julie Smith, Bill Beagle and myself.

John – Front door greeter and usher – helped with set up.

Julie  – Videographer – helped with set up.

Bill – Videographer

Laura – Collected questions, took pictures and co-emceed with Steve Cox – also helped with set up

Mary – Took notes to write a summary for Q & A – to get something posted today for those who were unable to attend

Cindy – Event producer

Given the hour and the event, was not sure how large of an audience we would have on Twitter.  I have to think about return on investment.  I have included an article about Twitter time – and listened to panel of three Twitter uber users today – they all concur that 8-5 is prime time.  We will discuss and even post a poll to determine if we should have someone tweeting at all events – or if resources should be allocated differently.  This was our first Town Hall, so we learned from it.  Our goal is to provide excellent customer service always.  If enough of our citizens would like to get tweets, we will provide.   http://pinterest.com/pin/270286415106330645/
